sound vs silence
you say your brain
is almost always
silent
and i can’t imagine
because mine shouts
so loudly
reminding me of
that embarrassing thing i said
the other day
in the same breath as it
wonders what i’ll be eating
in the morning
my mind is constantly on
overdrive
but some way
somehow
it quiets
when i’m with you
when i’m with you
i’m present
i’m not thinking about
what i could be doing
or should be doing
not pondering my
past mistakes
and future transgressions
when my mind does wander
it walks straight to you
it carves a path from your head
to your heart
and walks up and down
trying to decipher the
emotion
under every stone
and the meaning
in every inch of pavement
when i’m with you
i think deeply
but i do not worry
my anxiety sleeps soundly
in a bed of your reassurance
as i lay within your arms
and even as we talk through
anything and everything
i’m not afraid
because i know that as far as i can
fall
is also as far as you’ll go
to catch me
so i say what i feel
or at least try to
and trust that you’ll hold my words
with soft hands
and an open heart
you say your brain
is almost always quiet
and i often wish for that
luxury
to think so much feels
more like a curse
than a blessing
most of the time
but more and more now
i do not mind the
constantly spinning wheel
of my mind
not when so often
it circles back
to you
